Ambulatory phlebectomy removes unwanted varicose veins through tiny incisions in the skin. This procedure can be used on all types of varicose veins, although it is typically reserved for larger, bulging veins that will not respond well to other types of treatment. Ambulatory phlebectomy is considered a relatively non-invasive procedure, with incisions so small, they rarely need stitching. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis right in our Woodlands office and most daily activities can be resumed by the next day.
What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are blue and red lines that appear on the surface of the skin. They may be quite small, but many become large and bulging, leaving patients feeling self conscious about their appearance. While varicose veins are not usually serious, they can cause painful symptoms and occasional complications, including:
- Aching or heaviness in the legs
- Swelling of the legs, ankles and feet
- Persistent itching around the vein site
- Possible blood clots or ulcerations
If you are experiencing symptoms from your varicose veins, Dr. Reger can help you find the best treatment options for your individual situation. Many patients also seek treatment for purely cosmetic reasons, because procedures to address varicose veins are relatively non-invasive and provide little, if any, discomfort during and after the procedure.
The Procedure
Ambulatory phlebectomy is usually performed with a local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure in our Woodlands office. The treatment may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or two to complete, depending on the number of veins to be removed. Tiny incisions are made in the skin and a small device is used to grasp the vein and remove it. Incisions rarely require stitches and usually heal completely in a matter of weeks.
Recovery
After treatment, patients are instructed to wear a compression bandage for about one week to reduce discomfort and swelling and promote healing. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise is usually prohibited for a week or two. While the removed vein will not come back, additional veins may appear over time. Subsequent treatments can be performed to help patients retain positive results.
Because ambulatory phlebectomy is generally reserved for larger varicose veins, it is important to have a thorough evaluation prior to the procedure to ensure underlying veins are in good condition. Dr. Reger uses non-invasive evaluation techniques like duplex ultrasound to get a complete picture of a patient's vascular condition so treatment is customized to a patient's precise needs.
