Sclerotherapy is the most common method for treating spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Spider veins are red and blue lines that are visible on the surface of the skin. They may appear as unconnected lines or they might come together to form a sunburst pattern. Spider veins are rarely serious, but some patients do experience symptoms like heaviness in the legs or a dull ache as a result. Even patients that never experience symptoms may be interested in getting rid of their spider veins for cosmetic reasons.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a saline solution directly into the vein, causing it to swell and stick together. When blood flow is stopped, the vein eventually turns to scar tissue and fades from view. Blood is rerouted through other healthy veins in the area, resulting in more efficient blood flow through the legs.
The procedure is done right in our Woodlands clinic, and usually takes less than an hour to complete. Patients usually report minimal discomfort during the procedure and may return to many of their regular activities immediately after treatment. Compression hose are worn and aerobic activity is prohibited for the first few days. Some medications should also be avoided before and after sclerotherapy. Dr. Reger can advise you as to the medications you are currently taking and alternative medicines that might be available.
Benefits of Sclerotherapy
There are many reasons to consider sclerotherapy for the treatment of spider veins, including:
- Smoother, younger-looking legs
- An improved self image
- Reduction of potential symptoms associated with spider and varicose veins
- Reduction of possible complications like ulcerations and blood clots
- Relatively quick, painless procedure with few, if any, side effects
While some patients achieve the desired results with the first sclerotherapy treatment, others require additional sessions to completely remove the veins from sight. It is estimated that up to 80% of veins can be diminished in the first session, with final results appearing within three to six weeks. Larger veins may take much longer to disappear.
